According to the National Science Foundation’s 2006 demographic data, despite making up 24 percent of the total U.S. population, Native Americans, Hispanics and African-Americans comprise only 10 percent of the college-educated individuals employed in science and engineering occupations.

In an effort to change current demographics, Indiana University will hold the ExxonMobil Bernard Harris Summer Science Camp, allowing middle school students from the underrepresented segments of the population to learn about math and science while being exposed to a college atmosphere.

From July 11 to 23, students entering grades six, seven and eight will attend the camp free of cost. Fifty-four students were selected based on their strong grades in science and math courses, overall good conduct, recommendations from teachers, an admission essay and overall interests in the science, technology, engineering and math disciplines.

As of July 1, 2010, Indiana driver’s licenses can now be renewed online. Those who have an Indiana license, and thus have established their residency, can visit www.myBMV.com to renew their license 12 months or less before the renewal date, but not in the last 14 days before the license is to expire.

Hoosiers who lose their license or ID card also can apply for a new one on the site, as well as schedule a driver’s test at any BMV location in the state.

Those wanting to vote in Indiana can now register online at www.indianavoters.com. On the site, Hoosiers can submit a voter registration application electronically to the proper county voter registration office. Indiana becomes just the seventh state to offer such a program.

For a list of additional laws that go into effect today, see the Indy Star.
